Originally released by ATF in 1935 as Phenix “It is the same founder’s and designer’s News Gothic Extra Condensed, with several characters redesigned in the ‘round’ fashion of the time. It is similar to Jefferson Gothic, derived earlier from the same source by Monotype. Baltimore Type called it Tourist Extra Condensed [in 24- to 48-point sizes].” [McGrew]
Digital interpretations include Phenix American (Compugraphic, now Monotype, used for sample) and Phoenix (Red Rooster, 2011, expanded to 4 weights, with several alternates). Industrial Arts (Jeff Levine, 2017) is a loose interpretation without lowercase, in regular and oblique versions.
